James Duddridge, MP for Rochford and Southend East, is working with local volunteers and representatives from across Southend this week, in order to keep up the campaign momentum in the run up to the local Council elections in May.
This coming Saturday (15th March), activists will be out in Bleinheim supporting Ray Davy in his campaign to become the local councillor. Once again both of the Southend MPs – James Duddridge and David Amess – will be there, and with up to 40 volunteers having turned out at the last two Saturday action days in Thorpe and St Laurence the team are expecting another special day.
In the meantime, Councillor Sally Carr and six young local volunteers from Conservative Future were out and about last Saturday (8th March) along the Broadway in Thorpe Bay and in surrounding streets, gathering support for a people’s vote on the constitution-like EU Treaty. James has repeatedly called for such a referendum in Parliament, reflecting the strength of feeling locally, and will be debating it again in the House of Commons tomorrow afternoon.
Leader of Southend Borough Council, Nigel Holdcroft, said today:
“It’s great to see our local MP and councillors working together on such an important issue. The Labour Government has clearly ignored its promise to the people for a referendum over the Lisbon Treaty. I believe the people of Southend will see that the Conservatives are the only party that has kept its promise for a referendum and has the interests of our residents at heart.”
Councillor Sally Carr said:
“As a proud resident of Thorpe I find it disgraceful how this government has denied our citizens the right to choose whether we should pass even more power over to Brussels, especially since they had promised to do so in their manifesto. I am determined to protect the rights of the people in Thorpe; and by working with James Duddridge MP and our local Conservative Future we hope to prove to this government that we mean business.”
